Starting January 4, 2009 Beijing time, the TV series Demons began airing. I’m not particularly drawn to this vampire-fantasy genre; I finished Heroes, so I’ll make do with this one for now.
Downloaded it and took a look — ha, several of the actors are from the cast of Merlin. The show’s lead, Luke Van Helsing, is Arthur in Merlin, and his godfather Rupert Galvin is his father the king in Merlin…
This series is adapted from the classic Dracula vampire story, set in modern-day London. The story begins when teenager Luke Rutherford (played by Christian Cooke) is suddenly visited by his arrogant and insufferable American godfather, Rupert Galvin (Philip Glenister). Galvin’s visit is no casual one — he brings Luke some shocking news: the dark forces of the world are gathering, and as the last bloodline of the Van Helsing family (the famous vampire hunter — see the film of the same name), it is now his duty to destroy them.
Luke barely has time to think about this news before he’s thrown into intense training. Helping Galvin with this task is the beautiful but ice-cold Mina Harker (played by Zoe Tapper), a blind concert pianist revered as the leading authority on “half-lives” (vampires, demons, voodoo, ronin, and so on).
The last member of the four-person team is Luke’s best friend Ruby (played by Zoe Holliday). Ruby is a very feisty girl who not only loves bickering with Luke, but is also extremely keen on “destroying” things.
In addition, whenever Luke runs into “unidentified creatures”, the dangerous voodoo priest and bishop Simeon (played by Richard Wilson) will supply him with the traditions and myths behind each creature.
Luke’s first enemy is Gladiolas Thrip (guest-starring Mackenzie Crook), one of the most dangerous vampires in the underworld (the netherworld). A bounty hunter with a dark sense of humor, Thrip harbors a burning hatred for the Van Helsings, and he is determined to kill the last of the line.
Other half-lives Luke will battle include the “Noisy Boys”, a pack of hyenas in eye patches running wild through London’s streets; “Red Lips”, monkey-like creatures that lurk in the shadows and stalk human victims; “Mr. Tibbs”, a half-human, half-rat creature that experiments on humans in his basement; and “Gilgamel”, an ancient demon that devours children’s souls.
At the same time, Luke will also learn a secret: the truth about his father’s mysterious death fifteen years ago during a “business trip” abroad.
The more-than-six-episode Demons will air on ITV1 early next year. If you like stories of the Underworld or Van Helsing movie variety, you’re bound to enjoy this series.
Episode 1 plot: Luke Rutherford is an ordinary teenager — until one day, his late father’s friend Rupert Galvin suddenly shows up at his door. Galvin tells Luke that his origins are anything but ordinary: he is the great-grandson of the famous vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing, and Van Helsing was the sworn enemy of the vampire patriarch Count Dracula. Supernatural monsters are plotting a global attack, and Luke must take up the family mantle and fight them to the end.
Meanwhile, the most dangerous vampire in the underworld (the netherworld), Gladiolas Thrip, has awakened… This bounty hunter with a dark sense of humor harbors a burning hatred for the Van Helsing line, and he is determined to kill the last of the family. ——verycd.com
